Last Day in Tokyo, Japan

We left Nojima Youth Centre before 1200 hours and proceed to next stopover in the middle of the highway, Umi-hotaru.

Umi-hotaru (海ほたる ,Umi-hotaru, literally meaning "sea firefly") with a rest area consisting of restaurants, shops and amusement facilities. The Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line (東京湾アクアライン ,tōkyō wan akua rain?) is a bridge-tunnel combination across Tokyo Bay in Japan. It connects the city of Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture with the city of Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture, and forms part of National Route 409. With an overall length of 14 km, it includes a 4.4 km bridge and 9.6 km tunnel underneath the bay—the longest underwater tunnel for cars in the world.

Afterthat, we proceed straight to the Narita Tokyo Airport for our flight back home to Singapore.

Kitagata Elementary School & International Dinner with Kanagawa Scout Council

In all honesty, today's trip wasn't one we were all looking forward to, but having done it anyway, we were pleasantly surprised. It was a short visit to Kitagata Elementary School. Unfortunately the school is very sticky about photography because the students were not "media friendly". We are not allowed to publish any of their students' photos, but here's a lot of us in the school anyway.

We arrived to the excitement of the students who were glad to practice the simple English phrases which they were taught to memorise. Phrases such as "Hello", "Good Morning" and "How do you do?". We were told that the Japanese curriculum for English focusses on teaching vocabulary, so Japanese students know many English words and their translation to Japanese, however having the lack of grammar, they are unable to communicate in English confidently.

Some of us are glad to be studying in Singapore as our lessons are more interesting and interactive. However what was impressive about Kitagata Elementary was their focus on Visual Arts and Music. In the closing programme, the students from Grades 5 and 6 performed the playing of recorder, singing and the band played the theme of Indiana Jones, much to the delight of the Singaporean contingent (see video).

Right after the performance, we were back to the classes for school lunch. In Japan, Elementary Schools provide lunch for their students as a means to control their diet. The lunch was a healthy balance and prevented the students from eating unhealthy food or eating excessively. We left the school after a short closing speech from the Vice Principal and presentation of tokens.

As we returned to Nojima, the remianing groups who have not performed practiced in preparation for their performance in the evening. Time in the afternoon flew past so quickly that before we knew it, it was time to gather for the International Dinner.

The mood in the entire campsite was one of excitement as Cub Scouts, Scouts, Leaders and Parent Volunteers arrived from all over Kanagawa, Tokyo. The dinner began with a few formalities... speeches from the Commissioner, Scout and Cub Scout representing the Kanagawa Council, as well as from a Sub-Camp Chief and Cub Scout representing the Singapore Contingent.

Dinner was a great way to break ice and for Scouts and Leaders to mingle, talk and exchange namecards, scarves and badges. The Singaporeans also got so many origami handicrafts, it was impossible to count.

The night ended with the impressive performances from us "Skipping Mustapha", the River Valley RaVens with Radin Mas Dragons "Chan Mali Chan", and Yangzheng Yueng Ching Open Scouts "Fancy Drill". We bid farewell to the Japanese Scouts and Leaders in the same way we did with the Scouts and Leaders of Osaka at the Osaka Prefecture Children's Centre.
With that, Day 9 was over. We all went for our bath before bed with mixed feelings since we'll be on our way back to Singapore soon. Sigh. Otter led us in our daily reflections tonight.

Good morning,

We have been in Tokyo the past two days. Everyone is safe and well, however there is no internet connectivity at the Nojima Youth Centre. We apologise for the communication blackout, however there is nothing we can do, especially with the rigid 2200 hrs curfew imposed on everyone.

We are now at the Kitagawa Elementary School and are borrowing the internet here. Unfortunately we will not be providing further updates until we get back to Singapore. See you back in Singapore in a couple of days. In the meantime, enjoy the photographs from Days 5 and 6.

Tokyo Disney Resort

p/s: Sorry no other school gave us photographs and since all the schools went their own separate ways, we don't have photographs of other schools either.It's a happy day for both the young and old! We were up and about and quickly done with our breakfast routine and off on our way to 東京ディズニーランド Tokyo Disneyland!Tokyo Disney Resort was the first Disney park to be built outside of the United States and was opened on April 15, 1983. The park was constructed by Walt Disney Imagineering in the same style as Disneyland in California and the Magic Kingdom in Florida. It, along with its companion park, Tokyo DisneySea, are the only Disney parks not owned by The Walt Disney Company.

There are seven themed areas, each complementing each other yet unique in their style. Made up of the World Bazaar, the four classic Disney lands: Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, and two mini lands, Critter Country and Mickey's Toontown, the park is noted for its huge open spaces to accommodate the massive crowds the park receives

Tokyo Disneyland began celebrating the 25th Anniversary of its grand opening in April 2008, with special events, entertainment and merchandise.

At Tokyo Disneyland, we tried a new Spanish Churro Flavour, Honey Lemon. But more than anything, we tried many more popcorn flavours, which included Honey Popcorn, Soda Popcorn, Chocolate Popcorn and the most special of all, Curry Popcorn.

As for rides, our favourite must have been Space Mountain, followed by Big Splash Mountain. Too bad Space Mountain was too dark, so we only had photographs from Big Splash Mountain. The day ended with all of us completely tired out. Who would have thought that having fun would be so tiring?

Shin-Osaka to Shin Yokohama

It was the ride of a life-time! Imagine having to get 148 people on the train in less than 5 minutes and off in less than 1 minute! But we made it! En route, the SE News Team which had been under tremendous pressure to update the Camporee blog using a very slow internet connection continued to work, collating and editing photographs.Upon arrival, we were greeted by representatives from the Kanagawa Scout Council at the Yokohama Station. We were quickly directed to our buses, which incidentally had cute names such as Strawberry Poodle, Banana Poodle, Melon Poodle and Marine Poodle. The buses took us to our next campsite near a river, the Nojima Youth Centre.Unfortunately they did not have internet connection and we were unable to update the blog. We quickly checked-in, assigned rooms and were ready for dinner.
At Nojima Youth Centre, we were required to wash our own dishes after each meal. After dinner and washing, everyone took their bath quickly and were all in bed resting as it was an exciting day next. Our trip to Tokyo Disney Resort!

150 SINGAPORE CUB SCOUTS ENJOYED KAIZUKA
Yesterday at the Osaka Children's Centre, 130 Scouts of Senshu-Minami District, Osaka Scout Council interacted with 150 Cub Scouts of the Singapore Scout Association who were visiting Japan for their 4th Goodwill Cubs Camporee.

After greetings from Ms. Madelene Seow, the Cub Scout Programme Commissioner of the Singapore Scouts, and the International Commisioner of SAJ, Mr. Yoshio Danjo, Cub Scouts were mixed into four groups and led to enjoy adventure walk, archery and outdoor cooking - see the picture -. They will continue their programme today.

Justin Lee, 12, said "Japan is bit cold but it is fun to play with new friends. Cooking was very much fun."

We are now preparing to leave the Osaka Prefecture Children's Centre. Area cleaning is one big headache with lots of unclaimed lost and found... We are almost done and ready to depart for the Shin Station (Bullet Train) for our ride to Tokyo.

We'll give you more updates when we find an internet connection when we arrive. Its not easy to coordinate the collection of photos from all 12 packs and to update quickly (its almost immediately after the event), but rest assured, the news team is doing its very best.

As we leave Osaka, here's a collage of some of the camp food while we were in camp, just to assure you that your children have been eating well. ;)
Anyway, the news team stayed up late last night to sieve through the many photos and selected a few from each day. Do scroll down again to look through the posts from Day 2 so as to see these newly updated photos. The office here closes at 11pm so we only have an hour each day to update this blog. Osaka Educational Tour II - Kyoto

Immediately after breakfast, we went to the Nijo-jo (Nijo Castle). This UNESCO World Heritage Site was built as a Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun in 1603. It was completed in 1626 with additional buildings. This castle is one of the finest examples of Momoyama architecture in Japan. At the castle, we visited the Ninomaru Garden. We all enjoyed the breath taking sights very much.For lunch, we went to Kyoto Shin Station's underground mall, Porta. The Ramen there was very good. The visit to Heian Shrine was right after lunch. There was actually a wedding ceremony going on when we were there. The wedding area was out of bounds unfortunately.The Golden Pavilion or Rokuon-ji Temple was next. It was actually a villa in the past but was changed into a temple. The garden was not changed so it can still be enjoyed as of a hundred years before. The sights there even in winter, was still very beautiful. We still managed to enjoy the scenery even though we were rushing for time. Dinner was splendid at a huge shopping mall probably owned by Jusco. The wide variety of food available made us have quite a hard time, as we had to choose what we wanted to eat. After dinner, back to the campsite we went. and as usual, there was bath then lights out.

Its had been a fine but cold Sunday morning and the Cubs are all having lots of fun. The weather is about 7°C in the morning, but the temperature went up to about 13°C towards noon time today. As I would always say, pictures speak a thousand words, so we'll keep this post short and sweet.
All the Cubs and Scouts are obviously having fun. The Japanese weather and meals take a little more time to get used to, but everyone has managed to adjust well, including Ryan, the youngest participant in our troop. As always, they don't look like they're missing home! :) But we are certain that quietly in their hearts, they do... although some are missing Ba Chor Mee and Cheese Prata more than anything.

The Cubs are in good hands, so parents, do not worry! ;)We do have many more photos, so please check out updates and photos of our boys at our unit website or facebook group.

We'll be back in a week so hang tight and watch for more updates!

Saying Goodbye

After completing the environmental challenges, we headed back to the dining hall for lunch before jumping into our uniforms and proceeding to the gym for "Trading Places". That's the time we have to exchange badges, scarves, woggles and various other Scouting memorabilia.That brought our 2-day camp and combined activities with the Cubs and Scouts of Osaka Scout Council to a close. The closing ceremony was one we all participated in with mixed feelings. It began with a prize presentation ceremony to the Best Troop... It was not an easy decision but the Camp Chiefs and Japanese Leaders finally decided that the Award would go to Beni Zuru.

Congratulations everyone! You did well!

The prize presentation was then followed by a closing address by Madelene San, and the Organising Chairman from the Osaka Scout Council, Kinji San. A token of appreciation was then presented to the Osaka Scout Council which was accepted by Kinji San.The Japanese Cubs and Scouts left soon after as they would have to return to school tomorrow. It was a difficult goodbye, but inevitable. Tomorrow we proceed to the second leg of our Osaka Educational Tour.In the meantime, we will shower, have dinner and prepare for International Night at Kitagata Elementary School.

Show awareness of how our actions affect the environment and alternative ways to make a

Every day we do things that impact on the environment. Some things we do are good for the environment and some things we do are bad for the environment. Very often we do things without even being aware of how it affects the environment. This game encourages the Scouts to think about how our daily actions affect the natural world all around us.Natural disasters occur all around the world and can have a devastating effect on the natural environment and on human beings. There are lots of different types of natural disaster, for example, hurricane, tropical cyclone, typhoon, tornado, drought, flood, volcano, landslide, tsunami, heat wave, wildfire, insect plague, famine, health epidemic, avalanche and earthquake.

It is very important that we have an understanding of natural disasters. We need to be prepared to respond to them when they happen to us and to be able to provide support when they happen to others.

O genki desuka? We are having lots of fun here at Osaka but we miss all of you in Singapore too. Justin and Dharmansyah are putting on weight due to the delicious Japanese food. Congrats to Juan Yong for bravely attempting the Roller Coaster not just once, but twice. Wei Jie has taken the responsibility to look after the group, he even volunteered to clear the bento for the other teachers. The "tall one" has evolved into a shopaholic but don't worry everything is under control. Xylon and Teng Shin are the live wire of the group and never fail to brighten everyone's spirits. Leon has been appointed as the contingent's official translator. With peer support, Leon has participated in all the activities despite a slight headache yesterday. Don't worry, mummy. He is enjoying his trip. Thankfully nobody has fallen ill or lost anything yet (*fingers crossed*)Take care and hope to hear from all of you too.

Our planet is surrounded by a blanket of gases. This is our atmosphere. As the sun shines on the earth it sends us heat. Some of this is absorbed by the earth’s surface and some of it bounces back into the atmosphere. The reflected heat is trapped by the atmosphere and this keeps our planet warm. This is known as the greenhouse effect.

The blanket of gases is getting thicker as we release greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels for energy and as we cut down forests for timber and agriculture. Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide. As the blanket gets thicker, the temperature rises. As a result of this, our climate is starting to change.

An air pollutant is any unwanted substance or chemical that contaminates the air that we breathe resulting in a decline in air quality. Air pollutants include smoke, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, particulates and ozone.

Air pollutants have sources that are both natural and human. Natural sources includevolcanoes, wildfires, airborne dust, cattle digesting grass and natural radioactive decay. Although some pollution comes from natural sources, most pollution is the result of human activity. The biggest causes are the operation of fossil fuel-burning power plants and automobiles that combust fuel.

Most of the main air pollutants can be harmful to human health. Air pollution is frequently associated with respiratory problems. It can make people sick or cause long-term illness, particularly in those most sensitive to pollution, such as children and the elderly.

There are three ways in which animals can be affected by air pollution. They can breathe in gases or small particles, eat particles in food or water or absorb gases through the skin. Soft-bodied invertebrates, such as earthworms, or animals with thin, moist skin such as frogs, are particularly affected by absorbing pollution.Sources of air pollution and dust often leave residues on the top of exposed leaves. The sticky leaves activity collects these residues. This makes air pollution ‘visible’ and easier to understand. The air pollution in different areas can be compared and related to the source of the pollution.

Manta Ray Sea Scouts sends you our greetings from Osaka, Japan! The past five days were just great. Beneath the four layers of clothing that our leaders made us wear, we all enjoyed the cool weather. We went to Universal Studios the day before and the Spiderman ride was truly awesome.

We have been having two interesting days of interactions with the Japanese Cub Scouts. Mum, Dad, grandparents and friends, do not worry about us! We are eating our food, drinking enough water and sleeping with the heater on.

Closing of Day 4

After the series of adventure activities we were able to communicate a little more with the Japanese Cubs. We prepared for the campfire and rehearsed for our performances for the campfire.

Dinner was sumptuous Teriyaki Chicken and Fried Fish. Once we were full, we were ready to move off. We assembled at 1930 hrs moved off to the campfire circle. Though the temperature was a chilly 6°C, everyone enjoyed themselves. It rained halfway through the campfire for a few minutes but it soon stopped.Despite that, the campfire ended at about 2145 hrs with everyone still in high spirits. We also learned some simple Japanese songs.

We look forward to another fun-filled day tomorrow, the environmental challenges!

Ohayo Gozaimasu!

It had been an exciting 4 days! For the past days, we experienced cold temperatures, delicious Japanese food, hospitable scout leaders and many interesting activities!Kenner, Kiran, Bin Qian have been a great support to the younger cub scouts, always ensuring that everyone is at their best!
Rashid and Bryan have never stopped bickering, bringing much laughter to all of us.
Leo's sense of humour has brought the team closer than before!
Samuel, Elton, Daniel, Jonas' bravery at Universal Studios was commendable!
Jovian's command of the Japanese Language has been ever so helpful!
Qin Xiang, Nebuash, Jordan have been coping well and enjoying every moment of the Camporee despite being young!

We have all made new friends with the Japanese Cub Scouts today. We are all looking forward to another day of interaction and fun-filled activities with our new friends tomorrow!
In the meanwhile, do not worry about us as we are all eating and sleeping well! See you soon!!!

Lunch was wonderful... Japanese Curry Rice with vegetable croquette. The dining hall was filled with the excited voices of the Cubs.
After lunch, the news crew went on a walk. Track and trail practically in the woods. Another great experience, something we can hardly find time and space to do back in Singapore. Once we were done, we had time to entertain ourselves with a game we invented on-the-spot with the Japanese Cubs.

This is no ordinary outdoor cooking... its the same food with a Japanese twist! Yes, the bread twist tasted sweet and extra delicious, especially because it is also "marinated" with Japanese and Singaporean fingers. Very nice, really!Along with bread twist, we also had grilled banana with chocolates and poached egg in potato. It was the best outdoor cooking we've ever experienced.

We're out into the great outdoors and enjoying the other side of the magnificently beautiful Campsite we've not seen in the last few days. We were to complete two adventure station activities before heading back to the dining hall for lunch.Our news crew headed out to the Archery station and found it to be quite a unique experience. The bows and arrows were handmade using bamboo and other natural materials. The Cubs had to make their own bows before they can shoot any arrows!

Ohayogosaimasu Nippon Cub Scouts!

After yet another rather wet night, the day began bright and sunny with a weather forecast of 3°C - 13°C. This morning it was a very very cool 7°C. The 136 Japanese Cubs arrived with 8 Scouts, 31 Leaders and 23 Parent Volunteer Scouters. As we gathered for the Flag Break and Welcome ceremony, they removed their coldwear and some were clad only in their shirt and tiny shorts! They were braving the cold while the Singaporean Cubs were rubbing their hands to keep them warm, even in their jackets.A short chat with some of the leaders, we found out that the autumn this year is unusually cold. The Japanese Cub Scouts are young, energetic and very used to being exposed to the cold. Their usual school uniforms are also short.

We all had to remove our coldwear for a few minutes as we raised the flag and listened to Yoshio San, and Madelene San give the welcome and opening addresses. The day started with breakfast and after cleaning up the dining place, everyone took the bus to Universal Studios Japan (USJ). USJ is a dream-filled theme park where we enjoyed a variety of theme rides inspired by world famous movies, animations and comic series. Here, we experienced the thrill and excitement of the fantastically imaginative worlds of famous blockbuster movies today.
We were already excited when we arrived at the carpark and we could already feel the thrill spreading throughout the bus even before we alighted! Rides such as Hollywood Dream, The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman and Jurassic Park were enjoyable for both young and old. They left many Cubs, Scouts and Leaders screaming throughout the ride. The main course for lunch for most of us was a grilled Turkey Leg just outside the Jurrasic Park ride. Truly an experience, we felt like carnivourous dinosaurs devouring the huge leg!Other then the rides, there were also familiar characters from cartoons like Popeye and Betty Boop, who walked around posing for commemorative photos. Although the Christmas Parade was cancelled due to strong winds, we saw the colossal Christmas tree that was wonderfully decorated. The shops there sold many things that attracted us and we had already started to buy gifts for our family.

Look out for more regular updates tomorrow, as we remain in-camp to meet our counterparts from all over Osaka and have two days of combined activities with them.

After reveille, we had our breakfast and did our area cleaning to keep the eating area clean as usual. Mind you, the Japanese take cleanliness and hygiene seriously! Following that we took bus ride to the Tempozan Harbour Village. We reached there at 10am to visit the famous Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. There, we saw otters, sloths, dolphins, penguins, etc. and, the highlight of this aquarium, the whale shark. After the long and enjoyable walk, we went to Tempozan Marketplace for lunch.

Osaka castle was right after lunch. This castle was built in 1496 as a fortified temple. It was taken over by the warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi to consolidate his hold on the region. The main tower was built only after he took over the castle in 1583. The main tower is 8 stories high and we had to start from all the way at the top and work our way downwards. The view from the top floor was amazing and there was even a suggested way of walking round the tower top. History of the castle was shown on the 7th floor onwards. it was shown in ancient pictures, artifacts, short videos using holograms, and written text. There was also a small stall renting samurai costumes to people for them to try on and have a picture. We marked the end of our visit with a commemorative stamp on our camporee booklets.Having dinner was followed by a warm bath.

Settling Into Camp

As we entered the Osaka Children's Centre, all of us were required to remove our shoes and change into wabaki (Japanese slippers for indoor use). As we settled, the Chairman of the 4th Cubs Goodwill Camporee from Osaka Scout Council welcomed the us to Osaka and explained that although it is very cold, it is not winter as yet. He also went on to tell the excited contingent that Autumn, the season we are experiencing, is his favourite as nature displays itself in vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow.

After his welcome address, we had to learn the discipline of making our beds each day. The Centre's Estate Manager taught everyone how to prepare a Japanese futon for sleeping, and how to pack it up in the morning. Everyone will need to do this every morning, a Scout discipline. He also emphasised on two simple camp rules:

With that, everyone was sent to dinner.It was the first Japanese camp dinner and we also had to be briefed on the rules. As we enter the dining hall, we are expected to wash our hands with soap and water before collecting our food. After we are done, we are also expected to clean up our tables and drop off the cutlery into a hot water bath before leaving the dining hall.

Of course after a short rest, it was shower time!We took some time getting used to the traditional Japanese bath and onsen (indoor hot spring). First, we had to take a communal shower before getting into the really hot onsen! It must have measured about 45°C and by the time we got out, we were red like cooked prawns! ;) However the benefit of this bath was that we slept soundly through the night. Life is good... Zzzzz....

Arrival

Dear parents, principals, colleagues, siblings and friends, Ohayo gozaimasu! We apologise for this delayed telecast. We had been very busy settling into our campsite in the mountains of Kaizuka City and had trouble getting into the office for internet access.

You will be very happy to know that the 148-strong contingent arrived safely at Narita Airport and were thrilled by the cool weather and hi-tech toilets which washes and deodourises your butt automatically after you did your “big business”!

Within 30 minutes we were on the Airport Limousine on our way to Haneda Airport for our connecting flight to Itami Airport, Osaka. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by The International Commissiner of the Scout Association, Japan who had come in from Tokyo, Don San along with representatives from the Osaka Scout Council.Unfortunately there is NO MOBILE PHONE RECEPTION in the mountains so we are uncontactable in the evenings.

Sending Off Ceremony

Excitement filled the air as we stepped into the Multi-Purpose Hall at the HQ today. One could tell that everyone had been looking forward to the trip and was pretty much raring to go. Watch out, Nippon, here we come!

The day began with a Leaders' briefing that went on far too long. Everyone became very restless, but soon the programme kicked off with a last minute briefing on what we were to expect in Japan.

Then we had a long time of rehearsals for our items which we were to put up for international night. Before we knew it, the day was almost over. We received our Camporee Handbook, ID Tags, Luggage Tags (Ribbons) and best of all, the Contingent and Troop Badges!

The Guest of Honour was Deputy Chief Commissioner and International Commissioner, Mr Tan Cheng Kiong who presented the state and association flag to Mdm Madelene, the Contingent Leader.We're leaving on Tuesday 25 November 2008 from Changi Terminal 1. Facts on Scouting in Japan

Scouting was first introduced to Japan by a professor in Hiroshima College in 1909. However, it was not until 1915 that Scouting started to spread around the country.

The Federation of Boy Scouts of Japan was formed in 1922 and became one of the founding members of the International Scout Conference. In 1944, due to the war, the Federation was dissolved, but Scouting continued. After the war in 1946, the National Association of the Boys Scouts of Nippon was established and resumed the full membership of the World Scout Conference in 1951.

In 1971, Japan was host to the 13th World Scout Jamboree which was held at Asagiri Heights in the foothills of Mount Fuji. The Jamboree was attended by 23,758 Scouts from 87 countries.

The 23rd World Scout Conference was held in Tokyo after the World Jamboree.

The National Association was re-named as Scout Association of Japan (SAJ) in 1995. SAJ has opened the doors to the girls/female youth in all Sections at the same time.

A National Jamboree is held in Japan every four years, attended by Scouts from all over the world.

For older Scouts named Venture Scouts, a National Camp called "Nippon Venture" is held every four years between National Jamborees since 1983.

Scouting in Japan has four training sections for the boys and girls.

* Beaver Scout aged 6-8
* Cub Scouts aged 8 - 11 years
* Scouts aged 11 - 14 years
* Venture Scouts aged 14 - 18 years
* Rovers aged 18 - 24 years

The first four sections have a progressive badge system.

The first badge in each section is for "orientation", to allow a new member a period in which he can learn about the section.

To develop individuals' own interest and specialties, each section has a choice of Proficiency Badges.

Beaver Scout

Colony Laws:

The Rover Section does not have a badge system. Instead, the section helps each Rover

In the Scout section, there are four badges to encourage Scouts to perform character-Building
and skill-development activities in Patrols. They are Sho-Kyu (Tenderfoot), Ni-Kyu (2nd Class),
Ikkyu (1st Class), Kiku (Chrysanthemum, the highest lank in Boy Scout section)

The four classes in the Senior Scout section are:
Green Senior (orientation), Senior, Hayabusa (Falcon) and the highest class, Fuji, the name of Japan's highest mountain.

Where is Japan?

Japan lies to the east of the Asian continent, and consists of Hokkaido, Honshu (mainland), Shikoku, Kyushu, and about 3,000 smaller islands. The land is fertile and mostly covered with green. Climate is generally warm throughout a year, and there are four seasons changing every three months; spring (March to May), summer (June to August), autumn (September to November), and winter (December to February). People live and enjoy those tour seasonal changes.

How big is Japan?

Japan covers an area of about 378,000 square kilometres. It is often called that Japan is small country, but It is 3,500 kilometres long from north to south. Four-fifths of the area of Japan is composed of mountains, with a chain of mountains running through each of the main islands. We can see colorful change of landscape because of the different climate. Japan is almost as big as United Kingdom or Germany. Thailand is 1.36 times bigger than Japan.
